Plug-in solar questions

Answers to the questions we're asked most about plug-in solar and our kits.

Choosing a kit

What's the difference between ground-mount and hybrid mount kits?

Ground-mount kits sit on a stand on level ground and can't go on a wall. Hybrid mount kits have an adjustable stand for level ground or a house wall. The maker requires a professional assessment before any wall, flat-roof or raised install.

Which kit makes the most electricity?

Every kit sends up to 799VA into your home. Kits with more panel power can reach that limit for more of the day, but need more space. Our savings estimator shows an estimate for each kit.

Can I put a kit on a balcony?

No. The maker's datasheets say its kits aren't suitable for balconies, and timber balconies are excluded for every plug-in kit.

Are your kits on the ENA register?

We only sell kits whose exact model is listed as Compliant on the ENA Type Test Register. Every kit we list is on the register as Compliant, and we check it again before a kit goes on sale.

Setting up

Do I need an electrician?

Plug-in kits are plug-and-play for homes with modern RCD protection. If you have an older fuse box, or you're not sure, have an electrician check it first. The maker's datasheets also say the kits are designed for a suitable outdoor socket fitted and certified by a qualified electrician, so if there isn't one near your spot, an electrician can fit one.

Can I use an extension lead?

No. Plug the kit straight into a suitable wall socket. Extension leads, cable reels and adaptors aren't allowed.

Can I use a home battery with a plug-in kit?

No. Plug-in kits must not be used with a home battery. The rule is under review, but it applies today.

How do I see what my kit is making?

The microinverter connects to an app over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so you can see what the panels are producing.

Rules and permissions

Can I use a kit in Northern Ireland?

No. Plug-in solar can be used in England, Scotland and Wales, but it isn't permitted in Northern Ireland, so we can't deliver kits there.

I rent. Can I have a kit?

Only with your landlord's written permission, and they can say no. Leaseholders need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. Ask before you buy.

Do I need to register my kit?

Yes. Register it free at myplugin.solar before you first use it. Our guide to registering your kit explains how.

Do I need planning permission?

In England, most homes can fit a kit without a planning application, within limits: not on listed buildings, not on street-facing walls in conservation areas, and not projecting beyond set limits. In Scotland and Wales, check with your council. Our plug-in solar rules have the details.

Do I need to tell my home insurer?

Yes. Tell your insurer before you fit the kit.

Orders and delivery

How many kits can I order?

No. The grid connection rules allow one plug-in solar kit per household, so we sell one kit per household and our checkout takes one kit per order.

When will my kit arrive?

Each kit shows its dispatch date once it's on sale or on pre-order, and we'll confirm delivery times when ordering opens. If a kit isn't on sale yet, join the kit list on its page and we'll email you when you can order.

Can I cancel my order?

Yes. Cancel at any time before dispatch for a full refund, and for 14 days after delivery. Our returns and cancellations explain how.

How do I pay?

By card on Square's secure payment page. You pay the full total, including delivery, when you order.

Where do you deliver?

To your door anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales. Our delivery information explains how kits arrive.
